Welcome to The Sanford Project
Designed by Todd Kuhlman
The Sanford project represents the kind of visionary, client-focused design process that defines Kuhlman Scott Architects. It is a redevelopment initiative in Encinitas, where Kuhlman Scott Architects transformed a single-family property into a modern, multi-unit residence by taking advantage of multi-family zoning. The design expands the property by adding a second story to the existing second residence and introducing an accessory dwelling unit, resulting in a total of three distinct living spaces.
The architectural style is described as “soft modern," both sculptural and inviting, showcasing thoughtful changes that reshape the original structure into a contemporary home.
A standout feature is the “bird walk,” inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, which provides a dynamic outdoor walkway overlooking the sloped yard and connects key spaces within the home. The redesign introduces the “main street” concept, establishing a central spine through the property and transforming a traditional California bungalow into a vibrant, mid-century modern residence. Throughout the process, the architects translated the client’s sketches into a tangible vision, addressing both design and functional requirements with creative, client-centric solutions.
